In college, it is not uncommon to be forced to live in small spaces. You may not be used to this kind of space or be uncomfortable with the limitations that often come with dorms and renting. You’re very likely to have the problem of how to store and display all of your things without it seeming chaotic.

One of the most important things to do in a small space is to utilize all your space wisely.  One area that can often go unused and cause frustration are the awkward corners in almost every room. What are you supposed to do with them when you can’t hang things and nothing really fits? Luckily, there are actually quite a few ideas that will help you utilize that space to its fullest potential.

1. Find some triangle shelves

You may think that this awkward corner space is destined to be a complete waste, but that’s where you’re wrong. In fact corners can be the perfect place to implement some storage so that you aren’t filling up your walls with shelves. This can free up other spaces for items like paintings, photos, TVs, and much more.

Because most corners happen at right angles, it is usually pretty easy to find some triangle shelves that cater to this design. If you can’t find any at your local home goods store, try searching online through marketplaces like Etsy. Even if your walls aren’t at a perfect right angle, you may be able to get some shelves custom built to fit your room.

How you choose to use the shelves is totally up to you. You could input multiple so it almost looks like a bookcase or use just a few sparingly. These shelves are great places to house items that may not go with the schemes of other rooms.

2. Add some greenery

As always, adding plants to a space always brings more life into the room. If you have an awkward corner, why not fill it with a plant? Plants are a great option because they are also oddly shaped and perfect for squeezing into an odd corner. Depending on your layout, you could go for a large potted plant that sits on the ground or put a smaller on a stool or table. If you’re still short on space, try hanging a small plant from the ceiling.

One thing to be careful of is the conditions of the corner you choose. It may be likely that this corner doesn’t receive a lot of sunlight so make sure you choose a plant that does well in low light conditions. Additionally, if this corner is hit with afternoon sun every day, don’t choose something that doesn’t like a lot of sun. Luckily, there are lots of low maintenance types of houseplants to choose from. If you are still worried about keeping a plant alive, try a fake plant! Most people really can’t tell the difference.

3. Place your chair there

Do you have that one chair that doesn’t match any of your other furniture? If so, the awkward corner could be a perfect place for it. Sometimes we end up with a chair that’s been passed down to us or that we’ve just picked up on a whim. While you may love it, you might have difficulty trying to fit it in with the rest of your décor. Putting a chair like this in a corner is a great solution because it looks intentional. Try creating a cozy sitting area around this chair by adding some cute throw pillows or a fuzzy blanket. You could also try adding a rug and a small table to create a nice little nook.

4. Light up the space

Lastly, one of the most important parts of the room often fits perfectly into an awkward corner: lights. Lighting, whether in a living room, bedroom or otherwise, can play a huge part in the ambiance of a room. Placing a floor lamp or table lamp in the corner can have a completely different effect than simply using overhead lighting. Try out different lampshades and styles whether you want to go for traditional or modern. When considering lighting, always remember how the light will show up in the room. Do you want warm tones or cool tones? Do you want it to fill the whole room or simply be an addition to other lighting? All these questions are very important when considering where to place lamps and how to choose the right ones.

While you may just be looking for some things to fill the awkward corners, you may also be looking for some other important furniture items. This is where CORT comes in, a furniture rental company that can help you find the items you need without wasting money by purchasing your own.
