College Degrees You Can Only Get At 1 Place

Bagpipes at Carnegie Mellon University

If you play a mean bagpipe, you might want to major in Bagpipes at CMU. Former Conservatory of Music head Marilyn Thomas has said, “It makes sense for us to acknowledge bagpipes as a legitimate musical instrument. While there are bagpipe teachers around the world, what Carnegie Mellon offers is a program of study where a person can get a complete grounding in music as well as specific instruction on the instrument.”

Animal Shelter Management at Colorado Mountain College

If you’re an animal lover, a degree in Animal Shelter Management might be right up your alley. The College offers access “to a successful animal shelter and 220-acre Vet Tech farm”. It boasts students will have lots of time in the field (hopefully showering some shelter animals with kisses).

Growth and Structure of Cities at Haverford College

Technically, Haverford College and Bryn Mawr College are two separate institutions. Yet, buses run between the two every fifteen minutes, students can choose to live at either college, and can take classes at either. Students can even major in something only offered at the other college. So it’s going to count as one on this list. Bryn Mawr’s website describes it as a study of “the dynamic relationship of urban spatial organization and the built environment to politics, economics, cultures, and societies.”

Civil War Era Studies at Gettysburg College

The only place you can graduate with a minor in Civil War Era Studies is at Gettysburg College, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. What better place to study the Civil War, than at the site of one of the most significant battles, and the town where Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address? The College describes the program as “offer[ing] courses in all aspects of the Civil War Era including military, social, intellectual, and political history.”

Philanthropic Studies at Indiana University

Ever wonder what compels people to want to help each other? You just might get to find out if you get your B.A. in Philanthropic Studies. The program is “designed to educate the socially conscious student in the emerging field of philanthropy and nonprofit organizations”. It must be fairly popular, because IU’s website states that there are 81 faculty members working for the program.

The Beatles, Popular Music, and Society at Liverpool Hope University

This major is a dream come true for any diehard Beetlemaniac. Would you have to decode “I Am The Walrus” for finals? LHU is seated in Liverpool, which is also home to the Beatles – what better place to study them? They describe the major as one that will delve into “the significance of the music of The Beatles in the construction of identities, audiences, ethnicities and industries, and localities.”

Turfgrass Science at Penn State University

Why on earth do you need to know anything about turfgrass? According to PSU’s website, “employment opportunities in turfgrass science include golf course maintenance, sod production, sales and service, athletic field maintenance, and research technician.” It’s the perfect major for that kid who always dreamed of making sod.

Bassoon Studies at The University of Arizona

Another unique instrument major. If you attend UA, you can be one of the lucky few who graduates from the Bassoon Studio. In the 2014-2015 year, there were only (or, depending on your perspective, an impressive) 9 students in the program. UA describes the opportunities for a Bassoon major as “performing and teaching positions around the country and abroad.” They say that graduates “excel in other fields,” but getting a job at Google or the New York Times might be tough with this degree.
